Meet Sky

Beautiful Sky is a rough coated lurcher, who has been with us for a little while now. It was under extremely sad and difficult circumstances that we were asked to take Sky under our wing.

She is such a special girl that we don’t think it will be long before we find her a permanent home of her own – fingers and paws crossed.

Sky is currently being very well loved, cared for and pampered by one of our fabulous foster families, but we are keen to find Sky a permanent home that she can call her own.  Her foster family say that she is really lovely to have around and very loving.

Sky is 7 years old and still an active girl who loves her walks. She could live with another calm dog or would be fine as an only dog.

Check out our Facebook page for some heartwarming video footage of Sky, taken just after she got back from the grooming parlour and looking even more gorgeous than ever.

Encouraging news about the ‘two emaciated hounds’ – now known as Joy and Hansel

You might recall, via our Facebook and web pages, that we took two hounds into our care at the beginning of December. They became known as ‘the two emaciated hounds’  as they came to us in a horrendous state. Both had been deliberately starved, had intestinal parasites and flea dirt in their coats. It looked like they might not survive. However, G.R.A.C.E founder Tracy Cook refused to give up on them and rushed them straight to the vets. She was warned by the vet that it might be too late. Tracy insisted on help and begged the vet to give them a chance.

Following a period of intensive veterinary care, amazingly both dogs survived. On leaving the vets, both were taken home by Tracy. As well as receiving love, care and attention , they had four small meals a day to build them up gradually.  Despite being touch and go during those early days, both dogs have turned a corner and are doing remarkably well.

We have been blown away by the kindness of so many people who have gone out of their way to help these two poor souls. As well as raising funds to help towards their veterinary care, a Facebook competition saw the duo named ‘Hansel’ for the brindle boy and ‘Joy’ for the black girl.

Special thanks go to Catherine Kearney and her husband, who raised hundreds of pounds. Also a big thank you to Ali Smith for the wonderful grooming session, which saw Hansel and Joy enjoy a much-deserved pamper and left Ali’s salon with gorgeously clean, fresh coats.

We’re delighted to  report that Joy and Hansel have both put on weight too. When Hansel came to us he weighed a mere 17 kilos, but was up to 26 kilos in early January. At his latest weigh-in, he was an amazing 32 kilos. Joy was only 15 kilos when she came to us and was 23 kilos at her early January weigh-in. [NB: We are waiting for her latest figures]

Their personalities are starting to emerge too. Joy is a confident cheeky girl and Hansel is a sensitive soul.

So on behalf of Hansel and Joy, a big thank you to everyone who has made a donation, helped to spread the word about their plight or has taken the time to care.  Your help and ongoing support means so much to our charity and we are forever grateful.

The good news is that Hansel has already been reserved and has a forever home lined up. We will continue to look for the right loving home for Joy too. We will keep you posted!

Please send love, support and get well wishes for these neglected hounds

The amazing voluntary work done by GRACE founder Tracy Cook and the team of GRACE volunteers is extremely rewarding. However, it can also be incredibly challenging and heart-breaking. This was certainly the case earlier this month when Tracy was alerted to the plight of two emaciated hounds who were near death.  After an emergency rescue mission, when they came into Tracy’s care it was a harrowing sight. Both hounds had been deliberately starved. The black girl weighed just 15.4 kilos and the brindle boy was just 17.4 kilos [NB: a good weight for a greyhound would be around 35 kilos]. Both desperately needed a bath to remove the flea dirt in their coats. Both had intestinal parasites.

Tracy rushed them straight to the vets and begged him to give them a chance. She was warned that their lives were in jeopardy and they might not make it. They were put straight onto drips and everyone waited anxiously for news, hoping and praying that they would survive.

Amazingly, one week on both hounds have defied the odds and have reached their first major milestone – survival.  They are currently being cared for by Tracy at home and are slowly building up their strength on a day by day basis. As well as four small meals a day, both are receiving the love and kindness they so deserve.

They are still under supervision of the vet and have a long way to go physically and emotionally. However, it looks like they have turned a corner. The black girl now weighs 19.4 kilos and the boy is 21.6 kilos.

To help raise the funds for their care, we are holding a competition to choose names for this awesome duo. Please donate £1 for each name suggested and let us know your suggested names via our Facebook page, or via our other contact methods. You can pay via ‘PayPal friends and family’ on greyhoundrescue@outlook.com, or see the ‘how you can help’ page of our website for other payment methods. The winning names will be picked at random on 1st January 2018.

You can follow their progress via our Facebook page. Thank you to all those who have already expressed love and support for these two special hounds, who have surprised even the vet by surviving.

Thank you Jo and Beth

Some of the eagle eyed among you will have noticed that we have a beautiful new logo. We loved our old logo, but thought it was time for a change. Luckily our friend Jo Brodie, a talented artist, volunteered to design a new logo for us. We are thrilled with the results and hope that you are too.

We’ve also been extremely lucky to secure the support of web designer Beth Alexander too. Not only did Beth help to set up our website, she has remained on hand to assist with some of the technical stuff that we sometimes struggle with.

So a huge thank you to Jo and Beth!  P.S. If you have a talent that you think would be helpful to G.R.A.C.E, and you are willing to donate some of your time, we would love to hear from you.

Ozzie is loving life!

Can everyone remember our Ozzie? All round lovely lad and our resident telly addict, he was with us for quite some time and we were starting to think he’d be a permanent fixture. Well here he is as happy as can be living the good life in his new trial home.

Way to go Ozzie. This is what makes all our hard work so worthwhile. P.S. We also love the fact that he is quite the nosey neighbour – he’s probably trying to see if next door has a big TV!

Boats, trains, cars and planes!

We are always amazed at how loving greyhounds are; how well they adapt to new experiences and just how quickly they get used to the finer things in life!

This week new girl Tiffany experienced her first ever boat trip. A bit unsure at first, but she loved it.

Duke - ready for take off to Jersey

And let’s not forget Duke jetting off on a private plane recently to his new life in Jersey!

S.O.S – Funds Urgently Needed

Calling on the support of our amazing supporters. Our charity is run entirely by volunteers. Every penny raised goes to the welfare of the dogs in our care. Recent veterinary bills have seriously depleted our funds. Please can you share this post and image with your friends and family. If you are able to donate just £1 each, it would be a huge help! Payment methods are featured on the ‘how you can help’ section of this website. Thank you.

Lily and Duke are flying high!

We’re lucky to have some fantastic friends in the Channel Islands, who have helped to find forever homes for some of our G.R.A.C.E dogs. The latest lucky duo to be make the move to Jersey and Guernsey are Lily and Duke.

We are so grateful to Gail Hickmott and Alison Le Feuvre, who look after Jersey Whippets, for making this possible. Plus a big thank you to Chris the pilot, who touched down in the UK to transport Lily and Duke to their fabulous new life. Duke was particularly taken by the flight and looks like he was born to always travel via private plane!

Thank you Becky!

As a small charity, run entirely by volunteers, we rely on the kindness and compassion of dog lovers to help us in our cause. In particular, we are always grateful to volunteer foster families who temporarily take a dog into their home and love them as they would their own. It helps the dogs in our care move onto their permanent forever homes when they are ready.

Dogs fostered by Becky

We would therefore like to say a huge thank you to Becky and her family. In the last 8 months Becky has fostered all of the above dogs on behalf of G.R.A.C.E.

As a foster carer for G.R.A.C.E, we cover the costs of dog food, treats, bedding and veterinary bills etc. All you need to provide is the love and cuddles! If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a G.R.A.C.E foster carer, we would love to hear from you.
